We recently published a post about buying home decor at local art fairs. The post also featured seven talented artists from the recent Minneapolis Uptown Art Fair. After visiting the fair this past weekend, we reflected on the true caliber of the work displayed and the artists in attendance. Here are four reasons the Uptown Art Fair shines:
1. The Quality of Work
Not every artist is allowed to display their work at the Uptown Art Fair. They must pass through a rigorous application process in order to be eligible. Many of the artists are full-time and have been practicing their craft for years. The quality of talent is apparent.
2. The Sheer Volume of Art
This is no neighborhood art fair. With over 350 select artists from 40 different states (as well as a few foreign countries), there is certainly something for everyone. The extensive lineup of artists innately allows for tons of variety and creativity. We found everything from steampunk lamps to microscopic photography to paintings of SPAM cans, and everything in between. With such a great selection, it was easy to find home decor to fit any style.
3. A Chance to Mingle
The Uptown Art Fair may be elite, but it’s vibe is still friendly and open. Opportunities abound to chat with artists at their booths and ask them questions about their process, their favorite pieces, or just about anything you might want to know. It’s a great chance to mingle and connect with the brilliant minds behind the art.
4. A Rare Selection
One amazing benefit of the Uptown Art Fair (and other art fairs of its kind) is that we are often exposed to a wide breadth of work by a particular artist. As one veteran artist put it, “Unlike gallery shows, where you display maybe four to six pieces, an art fair allows you to display something like 40 pieces.” We have the advantage of peeking deep into an artist’s catalog and getting a full sense of their work. Such a glimpse is rare and extremely special.
If you didn’t get a chance to attend Minnesota’s #2 most popular get-together (second only to the MN State Fair), I highly recommend a visit next year. When it comes to class, culture, and sheer talent, the Uptown Art Fair has it all.
